This is the 8th episode of our collaboration with Visit El Paso to promote El Paso, Southwest Texas, New Mexico, and Juarez, MX, as they host the OWAA's 2024 annual conference this year.
Scott Cutler is our guest today. Scott is a board member of the El Paso/Trans-Pecos Audubon Society. In this episode, we’ll explore a rich array of birding opportunities, discuss the essential work of the Audubon Society in conservation and public outreach, and get a sneak peek into the birding opportunities at the upcoming Outdoor Writers Association of America's annual conference.
DISCUSSION
Passion for Nature and Museum Work: "I've always been somebody that's enjoyed being outdoors as far back as I can remember. I love going out in the woods, exploring, looking at plants, animals, and everything." — [00:03:04 → 00:03:17]
Childhood Adventures in Nature: "I suppose the earliest recollection I have of this outdoor work is going to my grandparent's home in Dover, Massachusetts, and they lived adjacent to a 100-acre nature preserve. And whenever we were back there, I'd go exploring." — [00:06:26 → 00:06:42]
Preserving Open Spaces for Future Generations: "But there's still, I think, over 8000 acres of open space land that's available. And that's just that part that the city owns. And then there's all these farms. El Paso was a huge farming community from the late 1800s to the early 20th century. And so there is that open space land that is very helpful for wildlife as well as protecting the water resources." — [00:13:35 → 00:14:04]
Wildlife Conservation Efforts: "In the El Paso area, we have a very active organization called Second Chance Wildlife, that we provide financial assistance so that they can continue to rehabilitate the injured wildlife." — [00:16:53 → 00:17:09]
Protecting Local Wildlife: "We go and have a table at [events] so that we can talk about what we do and the benefits of joining our organization and also the impact that we have on trying to protect the environment and the wildlife that's in our area." — [00:18:26 → 00:18:46]
Hidden Gems for Bird Enthusiasts: "You mentioned Hueco Tanks State Park. That is a hugely popular spot for people to go for bird watching. You do need to make reservations to go in there." — [00:23:00 → 00:23:09]
Bird Watching Hotspots Near El Paso: "And then Memorial Park, which is a city park, seems to be a really popular place for migrants, especially in the fall, but also in the spring because there are a lot of trees there." — r area." — [00:31:56 → 00:32:01]
Indigenous Pathways: "Another thing that's nice about Waco Tanks is there is a very historical component to that field trip, because that has been an important sort of pathway for Native Americans, indigenous people, to use in their migrations as they moved around over the seasons." — [00:35:38 → 00:36:01]
The Importance of Nature: "I think finding that people are so enthralled with the outdoors and providing them with an opportunity to get out and learn about it." — [00:39:20 → 00:39:33]
